How does it all work?

Step 1:
Schedule your free consultation

Our first meeting is free of charge.

This meeting enables you to ask any questions and get a feeling for what counselling involves

It gives you a chance to tell me about why you have come to counselling, and a chance for me to assess your problems and difficulties.

Step 1:
We create a plan for you to move forward

In the next appointments we will explore your reasons for coming to counselling in more depth, look at what your desired outcomes for counselling are, and set the goals for counselling. We will also look at realistic plans to achieve your goals and draw these up.

Over the sessions we will explore your problem and review our progress together

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at the first meeting?

I offer a free 30 minute telephone consultation.

In this session you can decide whether you wish to go forward to paid counselling sessions with me.

In the first paid counselling session I will conduct an in depth initial assessment and ask some questions in relation to what we have talked about in our first free consultation.

We will also go through some paper work, where I will gather some personal information, look at the practicalities of our working together, such as
fees, cancelling appointments, and the number of sessions and go through the therapeutic agreement.

How long does therapy last?

Therapy lasts 60 minutes. It is important you arrive on time for your appointment.

How often will I see you?

Many people prefer a regular appointment.

This is something that can be discussed in our first meeting. I try to be flexible.

However it is important to establish the therapeutic relationship as this provides the foundation for effective therapy and is beneficial for change.

What happens if I am going to be late?

I understand if people are going to be a few minutes late, however please ring or text me to let me know.

Please appreciate we only have an hour for your appointment and generally this cannot be extended and you will be charged the full hour.

If I am able to I will try and extend if you are just a few minutes late and I have no other appointments.

What about confidentiality?

Confidentiality will be gone through thoroughly in the initial assessment and you can ask me any questions in person. Your sessions are subject to professional confidentiality. I will not pass on your personal information or attendance at counselling with any other person, unless you ask me to do so. There are some exceptions below

  • If I think you are at risk of harm to yourself or other people
  • If I believe a child or vulnerable adult is at risk of abuse or harm
  • A court may be able to subpoena me for information and under these circumstances I am required by law to tell the truth under oath
  • If you share information with me about terrorism or a serious criminal offence I am required by statutory law to report this

Should I need to break confidentiality I will firstly discuss the situation with you, unless the situation requires me to act immediately to safeguard the physical safety of yourself or others.

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapeutic approach
developed by Francis Shapiro in the 1980’s. It is effective in helping individuals heal from
traumatic events.

How much does it cost and how do I pay?

Individual counselling costs £65 and lasts 65 minutes. Couples counselling cost £80 and lasts 80
minutes. EMDR costs £90 and lasts 60 minutes. Payment is by BACS prior to on at the start of the session.

Do you offer concessions on your fees?

I offer 5% for seniors and 10% on block bookings.

What ways can I pay for counselling?

I accept payment by BACS only

What happens if I do not attend an appointment or cancel it?

All missed appointments are charged in full.

If you cancel your appointments with a full 36 hours, notice these are not charged for.

I operate a discretionary policy for some situations but these are discussed on an individual basis.

What happens if the counsellor cancels my appointment?

I will always give you advance notice of any holidays I may take.

If I should cancel an appointment for an unforeseen reason, you will not be charged and a re-arranged appointment will be made as soon as possible.

How does EMDR work?

EMDR activates an individual’s information processing system by asking them to focus on a
specific moment relating to the traumatic memory, along with images, emotions, negative
beliefs and bodily sensations associated with it.

This stimulates the memory network after which bilateral stimulation is applied.

EMDR will reprocess unprocessed memories, which are distressing, because they are
fragmented, and are not integrated, and integrates them reducing their distressing content.
